The fan on my Surface Pro 3 is running incessantly. I am still on W8.1, and have no desire to update to W10 at this time.

I have checked the task manager and the only thing using resources is FireFox. I have looked online about removing the W10 updates but I cannot get it to work. I cannot find how to “open as administrator” to clean the files off my SP3. I am the admin, and am logged into that account when using the SP3.

Any ideas? I dislike the fan running, and it never used to unless I had both Chrome and FireFox open and was streaming from YouTube as well.

Thoughts?

I’ve had this for close to a year now, and it hasn’t been this bad until the last few days.

It seems to only happen with FF open, I only have FF and one tab, Oppo, open right now and it started again. Close FF, it quiets down.

It usually never has an issue being too hot with both FF and Chrome open unless I am using tons of tabs and watching video/streaming music.

Firefox will chew up memory, that’s likely the issue especially when streaming. No need to “clean” anything up, that is just static data.

Stop using Firefox then. Opera, Tor, and even modern IE are vastly preferable IME. But definitely consider Windows 10. It runs leaner and faster on all my laptops and desktops so far, and Edge isn’t bad, either. I’m most happy about having Cortana on the computer instead of just my phones.

I have been waiting for a collective “all clear” when it comes to installing W10. I use my SP3 at work, so I cannot afford any down time fixing stupid issues.

I’ve never had an issue with FF before now. Obviously streaming uses more resources. But just having FF open at all today seemed to be taxing. No idea why. It’s up to date, and I even installed it again to be sure.

Chrome hasn’t been an issue either. I know it can be, but it’s been fine for me as well.

I think it’s all the W10 update that MS pre-installs.

Fair enough, but my acquaintances with Surfaces (from gen 1 all the way to 3 Pro i7) haven’t had any issues since early August, and it was mostly on the older machines with the stylus support.

I’d say try rolling it to 10 then. We’ve had better battery performance at least. You can roll back too, so it’s pretty painless to try.

This is good to know. I may go ahead and update once I get back from vacation. Since my SP3 is turned off right, I don’t have to worry about the fan making any noise anyway.

Based on boxrockets reply I think I may go ahead and update soon.

Yeah, you don’t have anything to lose. I’ve upgraded/installed a bit over 100 times now and haven’t run into any issues.
